Your route in three steps: 1. Get the certidão or the Polícia Federal certificate → 2. Apostille at a cartório → 3. Sworn translation into Spanish

We are not affiliated with the Polícia Federal, any cartório or any Spanish authority.

In Brazil this is often called a tradução juramentada para a Espanha, and Spanish consulates in Brazil that require an official translation accept it.

Most Brazilians who need these translations already live in Spain. They need papers for arraigo, a nationality file or a residence card. Others are students and remote workers applying from Brazil. Whatever the file, the order is the same: apostille first, translation second.

How do I apostille Brazilian documents for Spain?

You apostille Brazilian documents at a cartório, a notary or registry office in Brazil. The Apostille Convention has applied to Brazil since 14 August 2016. Under CNJ Resolution 228/2016, cartórios issue the apostille, now through the CNJ's electronic Apostil system. After that, the Spanish translation covers the document and the apostille.

The one fact that matters: get the apostille in Brazil, but have the translation made by a Spanish sworn translator. A Brazilian tradutor juramentado is not one of the routes listed in Hoja 61.

Step Where What to know
1. Get the document Cartório, Polícia Federal website or university Ask for the inteiro teor version of civil records
2. Apostille A cartório (HCCH status table; IRIB on CNJ Resolution 228/2016) No Spanish consulate legalisation afterwards
3. Sworn translation Online, from scans PDF by email; paper on request

We translate the apostille together with the document, as Spanish offices expect. To prepare Brazil documents for Spain in one order, see apostille and sworn translation. Why the order matters: apostille before or after translation.

Living in Spain: how do you get Brazilian documents apostilled from here?

You do not need to fly to Brazil. Some records can be ordered online, and a relative or representative can handle the cartório apostille for you. Once the apostille is on, a scan is enough for us. Check each step with the issuing office before you start.

Route How it works Check first
Online The Polícia Federal certificate is issued online and free (gov.br) Whether your office also wants state certificates
A relative in Brazil They request the inteiro teor at the cartório and have it apostilled there Which cartório holds your record
A power of attorney (procuração) Someone you appoint acts for you at the cartório Ask the Brazilian consulate in Spain how to grant one
Brazilian consulate in Spain May help with some civil records or a procuração Ask the consulate which services it offers
Send us the scan We translate the document and its apostille from a clear scan Every page, front and back

We work from a scan. Ask your Spanish office whether it also wants to see the apostilled original at your appointment.

Is a Brazilian sworn translation accepted in Spain? (tradutor juramentado)

Not as a listed route. Extranjería's Hoja 61 accepts three routes. They are a MAEC sworn translator, a Spanish mission abroad plus MAEC legalisation, or the issuing country's mission in Spain plus legalisation. A Brazilian tradutor juramentado is not one of the routes listed in Hoja 61.

Read the rule in Hoja informativa 61. A MAEC sworn translation is official in Spain and needs no further legalisation. In Spain, this traducción jurada portugués–español is what offices mean by an official translation.

Portuguese sworn translators are fewer than English or French ones on the official MAEC list. Order early when a deadline is close. More on the language pair: Portuguese to Spanish sworn translation, part of our sworn translation by language. For rarer pairs: sworn translation into Spanish from any language.

Which Brazilian certidões do we translate into Spanish?

We translate the Brazilian records that Spanish offices request most, with their cartório apostilles. The Portuguese sworn translator is MAEC-appointed, and your quote confirms the delivery date. Names are checked against your passport, and differences get a translator's note.

Brazilian document Spanish name Translation page
Certidão de antecedentes criminais (Polícia Federal) Certificado de antecedentes penales Police clearance certificate sworn translation
Certidão de nascimento (inteiro teor) Certificado literal de nacimiento Birth certificate sworn translation
Certidão de casamento Certificado de matrimonio Marriage certificate sworn translation
Diploma Título universitario Degree certificate sworn translation

Brazil antecedentes criminais apostille for Spain

Spanish offices usually see the federal certidão de antecedentes criminais from the Polícia Federal. It is issued online, free, and valid for 90 days (gov.br). It does not cover all state police and court records, so state certificates may also be needed. Apostille it at a cartório.

Last checked: 1 October 2026.

Brazil certidão de nascimento apostille for Spain

Ask the cartório for the inteiro teor, the full copy of the birth record. The Consulate General of Spain in São Paulo gives one example. For a birth registration, it asks for an apostilled inteiro teor issued in the last 12 months (São Paulo checklist). Other offices set their own dates.

Can Brazilians get Spanish nationality after two years?

Yes. Brazilians, as nationals of an Ibero-American country, can apply for Spanish nationality after 2 years of legal residence in Spain. The rule is Civil Code article 22.1. Most residence routes need 10 years, so this is a real advantage. The Ministry of Justice still asks for translated Brazilian documents.

The rule is in Código Civil article 22. A nationality file needs your birth certificate, apostilled and translated. It also needs a criminal record certificate from Brazil, apostilled and translated. The birth certificate is the only document that may be older than 6 months. Brazilians sit both the DELE A2 and the CCSE, because only nationals of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from the DELE. Both are in Spanish, so they need no translation. Full document list: Spanish nationality sworn translation.

What delays Brazilian files in Spanish offices?

Most delays come from the document, not the language:

  • Short-form certidão. Ask for the inteiro teor.
  • Expired PF certificate. It is valid 90 days; order it last.
  • Missing state certificates. The PF certificate does not cover state records, so check your office's list.
  • A translation made in Brazil. A tradutor juramentado is not a Hoja 61 route.
  • Translating before the apostille. The apostille page is then missing. Translate after it.
  • Names that changed. Marriage or divorce may change a surname. We follow your passport and add a translator's note.
  • A correction notice. Ley 39/2015 article 68 gives 10 working days (días hábiles) to reply (BOE), so send us the document at once. See correction notice sworn translation.

Which Spanish procedure are you preparing with Brazilian documents?

Brazilian documents most often support arraigo, nationality and regularisation files from inside Spain, and student visas from Brazil. Each uses the same apostilled certidões, sworn-translated into Spanish. Pick your procedure below; each line notes what matters for documents issued in Brazil.

Frequently asked questions

Can you translate a Brazilian criminal record certificate?

Yes. We translate the Polícia Federal certificate and its apostille. It is valid for 90 days, and state certificates may also be needed, so check your office's list.

How long does a Brazilian apostille take?

Ask the cartório. The digital Apostil system can be quick, and no official processing time is published.

Can the Brazilian consulate in Spain translate my documents?

It depends. Hoja 61 accepts a translation by the issuing country's mission in Spain, then apostilled or legalised by MAEC. Ask the consulate whether it offers this service.

Can I order from Madrid while my certidão is still in Brazil?

Yes. A relative can collect and apostille it, then send you a scan. We translate from the scan; see the in-Spain routes above.

How do I send my Brazilian certidões for a sworn translation?

Upload scans or clear photos of every page, including the cartório apostille. Originals are never needed for the translation. You receive a fixed total in euros, before you pay. You can order from Spain or from Brazil.
