Your route in three steps: 1. State attestation (or HRD for education certificates) → 2. MEA apostille → 3. Sworn translation into Spanish
Can sworn translations for Spain be done in India?
No. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi states that official sworn translations cannot be done in India. A sworn translation must come from a translator appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). We work with MAEC-appointed sworn translators. You send your apostilled documents online, from Spain or from anywhere in India: Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore.
The one fact that matters: "Official Sworn Translations cannot be done in India." — Embassy of Spain in New Delhi
For visa files only, the embassy can seal an unofficial English–Spanish translation; that seal does not cover Extranjería, nationality, homologation or the Registro Civil. We compare both options in the embassy seal versus a sworn translation.
A translation by a MAEC-appointed sworn translator is official and valid in Spain without further legalisation, under Real Decreto 724/2020. One translation serves your visa and your later procedures in Spain. We are not affiliated with the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi or any Spanish authority.
How do I apostille Indian documents for Spain?
Indian documents for Spain need an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), issued through its outsourced centres. Most documents first need attestation by the issuing state, or by HRD for education certificates. Apostille first, then send us the document and apostille together for sworn translation into Spanish.
India is an apostille country, so no embassy legalisation is needed afterwards (HCCH status table). Finish the state attestation and the MEA apostille before you order. Translating earlier leaves the MEA apostille untranslated, and the file then needs a second translation. Background: why the apostille comes before the sworn translation.
| Step | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Attestation | Notary/HRD (education) or state attestation (personal documents) | Times vary by state. Check before you book travel. |
| 2. Apostille | MEA, through its outsourced centres (MEA) | Laminated certificates can be refused. |
| 3. Sworn translation | Online, with us | Certificates and degrees 24–48 hours; transcripts 2–3 working days. |
| 4. Delivery | Digitally signed PDF; paper by courier if an office insists | We translate the document and its apostille together. |
If you prefer one order for both steps, see apostille and sworn translation.
Already living in Spain? Getting Indian documents apostilled from here
You can usually finish the Indian side without flying home. The MEA apostille is issued in India, so a relative or an authorised agent normally takes your document through state attestation and the MEA centre. Once the apostille is on, you send us scans from Spain and we translate the document and apostille together.
Indian residents in Spain most often need these documents for:
- Arraigo: a criminal record certificate from each country you lived in during the last 5 years, apostilled and sworn-translated. See arraigo sworn translation.
- Renewals after the 2026 regularisation: permits last one year, so renewals fall due from 2027. See the 2026 regularisation and its renewals.
- Spanish nationality: a birth certificate and an Indian criminal record certificate, legalised and translated. See Spanish nationality sworn translation.
- TIE renewals, family members and requerimientos: see Extranjería sworn translation.
| Route from Spain | Best for | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Embassy of India in Madrid | Police clearance certificate while you live in Spain | Ask the Embassy of India in Madrid whether it can issue your PCC from Spain. Ask the office handling your file whether it needs any further legalisation. |
| A relative in India | Birth, marriage and education documents | Ask the MEA outsourced centre and your state whether an authority letter and ID copies are enough. |
| Power of attorney | Complex cases, or when no relative can help | Signed in Spain, it may itself need formalities in India. Check with an Indian lawyer first. |
| Scans to us | Every route, once the apostille is on | We never need the originals. |
We do not advise on immigration law. For your file, ask your lawyer or gestoría which documents to order. Then get a fixed quote for your Indian documents and we tell you the delivery date before you pay.
Where do I get a police clearance certificate for Spain in India?
In India, you get a police clearance certificate (PCC) for Spain from your Regional Passport Office. The India PCC then needs an MEA apostille and a sworn translation into Spanish (PCC translation into Spanish). Validity is set by each office, commonly 3 to 6 months. Spanish consulates and BLS checklists in India usually ask for a recent PCC, so check yours.
An India PCC apostille for Spain follows the same MEA route as other documents. Order the PCC last, after your other documents are ready.
Family reunification through New Delhi has its own validity rules; see the embassy's family reunification page. Translating the PCC itself is covered on our police clearance certificate sworn translation page.
Last checked: 1 October 2026.

India birth certificate apostille for Spain
Birth certificates go through state attestation first, then the MEA apostille. Use the municipal certificate with your full name and parents' names. Laminated copies can be refused, so keep the original unlaminated.
India degree certificate apostille for Spain
Degrees need HRD or state attestation, then the MEA apostille. Apostille the degree and transcripts together. For homologation, see India degree homologation sworn translation.
India marriage certificate apostille for Spain
Marriage certificates follow the same route: state attestation, then the MEA apostille. Time it with the PCC, as both have short validity.
Documents in Hindi, Punjabi or another regional language
According to the official MAEC list of sworn translators as of August 2026, there are no sworn translators for Hindi or Punjabi. Ask the issuer for an English or bilingual version where one exists. Mumbai consulate checklists (student visa example) ask for sworn translation of documents in a regional language, except passports and financial documents for some visa types. Check your consulate's checklist. For other cases, see sworn translation into Spanish from any language.

What mistakes do Indian applicants make with translations?
Five avoidable problems can delay an Indian file:
- Laminated certificates. Laminated degrees and certificates can be refused for apostille. Request a fresh copy before you start.
- Single-name passports. Many passports show one given name only, or Singh or Kaur as the surname. Other documents may show a different form. We check every name against your passport. Where spellings differ, the translator adds a translator's note. More in our guide to the single-name passport in Spain.
- PCC ordered too early. The PCC is time-limited and must still be valid on your appointment date. Order it last.
- Translating before the apostille. The apostille must be on the document before we translate. Otherwise it needs a second translation.
- Ignoring a correction notice. If Extranjería sends a requerimiento about an Indian document, you have 10 working days (días hábiles) to respond under Ley 39/2015, article 68, or the application is treated as withdrawn. See correction notice sworn translation.
How much does a sworn translation of Indian documents cost?
A sworn Spanish translation of one apostilled Indian certificate costs roughly ₹3,000–4,500 in India, based on quotes we collected in 2026. As an indicative market range, sworn translations in Spain cost about €30–120 a page. That is roughly €30–80 for the first page and €15–40 for later pages (Cronoshare, January 2026). This is a market range, not our price. Our price includes translating the MEA apostille. See the full price table.

Four checks for your Indian file: credentials, rejection, data, deadlines
An Indian PCC or degree often travels a long way before it reaches a Spanish office, so check these four points first.
- Is the translator real? Every translator we work with is a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). Each page of your translation carries their official seal and signature, which you can check in the official MAEC search (Buscador-STIJ); step by step in how to verify a Spanish sworn translator.
- What if the office rejects it? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds. Read what happens if a translation is rejected.
- Is my data safe? Your scans are deleted within 7 days of delivery; see our privacy policy.
- BLS slot or Extranjería cita soon? If your PCC is close to expiry, use our urgent sworn translation service.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Spanish embassy in India translate documents?
No. The embassy states that official sworn translations cannot be done in India. For visa files only, it can seal an unofficial English–Spanish translation. That seal does not cover procedures inside Spain.
Do I need state attestation before the MEA apostille?
In most cases, yes. Personal documents usually need state attestation and education certificates need HRD attestation before the MEA will apostille them. Check the current requirement with the MEA outsourced centre for your document.
Can a relative in India get the MEA apostille for me?
Often, yes. Rules on authority letters vary by state and by MEA centre, so check before your relative goes. Once the apostille is on, send us the scans from Spain.
