You receive a digitally signed PDF, and originals are never needed. Moving here from abroad? Spanish consulates that require an official translation accept it too.
We work with MAEC-appointed sworn translators. We are not affiliated with any Spanish authority.
Why does Spain need English documents in Spanish?
Spanish public offices work in Spanish, so a foreign document must be translated before they rely on it. Extranjería's information sheets ask for a translation "por un traductor jurado". The Registro Civil and the Ministry of Justice also expect English certificates in Spanish. English is no exception, even though many officials read it well.
Spanish consulates abroad set their own visa checklists, so follow yours. Once you file in Spain, you need a sworn translation. Check your consulate's checklist for the visa stage.
Bilingual documents are a special case for degree homologation. The Ministry of Science says a document written entirely in two languages needs only one of them translated (Ministry of Science, translations). This is a homologation rule, so check other procedures separately.
Who is a traductor jurado de inglés?
A traductor jurado de inglés appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC), through its Office of Language Interpretation (OIL), translates English documents for Spain. English has the largest group on the official MAEC list. Their translations are official in Spain without further legalisation, under Real Decreto 724/2020.
The rule is in Real Decreto 724/2020. You can check any translator in the official MAEC Buscador-STIJ. Match the name, the language pair and the number on the seal. Last checked: 1 October 2026.
Other pairs are far smaller:
| Language into Spanish | Sworn translators on the MAEC list (official register, August 2026) |
|---|---|
| English | About 3,770 |
| French | About 1,289 |
| Arabic | About 59 |
| Urdu | 1 |
| Hindi, Punjabi, Nepali, Tagalog, Tamil, Sinhala | 0 |
This is why the English version of your document matters. If a document exists only in Hindi, Punjabi, Nepali, Tagalog, Tamil or Sinhala, ask the issuing office for an English or bilingual version. We then translate the English. For other languages, see sworn translation into Spanish from any language, or browse all languages we translate into Spanish.

Is a UK or US certified translation valid in Spain?
Not for procedures inside Spain. A certified translation made outside Spain, for example by a UK or US translator, is not a sworn translation. Most Spanish offices won't accept it. It is not one of the routes in Extranjería's Hoja 61, which names a MAEC sworn translator first. Spanish consulates set their own visa checklists, so follow yours for the visa stage.
In Spain, when an office asks for an official or "certified" translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. So a request for a "certified English to Spanish translation in Spain" is met by a sworn translation.
So if you live in Spain and file with Extranjería, the Registro Civil or the nationality office, order a sworn translation. The full comparison is in sworn vs certified translation.
How we handle names
A name that does not match the passport is a common reason for a returned file. The sworn translator reproduces each name exactly as the document shows it. We then compare it with your passport. Where spellings differ, the translator adds a note rather than "correcting" the original.
| Original (English) | Sworn translation (Spanish) |
|---|---|
| Name: Robert J. Smith Jr. | Nombre: Robert J. Smith Jr. |
| Passport: ROBERT JAMES SMITH JR | N. del T.: en el pasaporte del titular figura «ROBERT JAMES SMITH JR». |
| Name: Mohd. Imran S/o Abdul Rashid | Nombre: Mohd. Imran, hijo de Abdul Rashid |
| Passport: MOHAMMAD IMRAN | N. del T.: en el pasaporte del titular figura «MOHAMMAD IMRAN». |
Single-name passports, such as a given name only, need the same care. Send your passport photo page with your documents so we can check.
English-language challenges we watch for
- Abbreviations. S/o, D/o, W/o are rendered in Spanish (hijo de, hija de, esposa de); abbreviations such as Mohd. are kept as written.
- Dates. US documents use month/day/year. Spanish uses day/month/year, so 04/05/2020 must be read correctly.
- Grades and titles. CGPA, First Class Honours and GPA are translated, never converted.
- Stamps, seals and handwriting. Each one is described in the translation where it appears.
- The apostille. It is part of the document. Get it first, then we translate the document and apostille together. See apostille before sworn translation.
Which Spanish procedures need English documents translated?
Residents in Spain usually need English documents for Extranjería, nationality and Registro Civil files. Each procedure has its own list, but the translation rule is the same: a sworn translation into Spanish of the apostilled document.
- Residence cards, renewals and family members: Extranjería sworn translation
- Arraigo, with a criminal record certificate from each country you lived in during the last 5 years: arraigo document translation
- Citizenship by residence: Spanish nationality sworn translation
- Marriage in Spain, births and registrations: Registro Civil sworn translation
- Degrees and professions: degree homologation sworn translation

Four checks before you order an English translation
Sending a UK birth certificate or a US FBI check to Extranjería? Check these four points before you pay.
- Is the translator real? Every translator we work with is a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC) and listed on its official register. Their seal and signature on each page can be checked against the MAEC list, following how to verify a Spanish sworn translator.
- What if Extranjería returns it over a name or date? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds. See what happens if a translation is rejected.
- Is my data safe? Files are deleted within 7 days of delivery, as our privacy policy explains.
- Is your appointment or requerimiento close? Use our urgent sworn translation service.

Frequently asked questions
Can one translator handle a full set of English documents?
Yes. One MAEC-appointed sworn translator can translate your whole English set, such as birth certificate, police certificate, degree and bank statements. Names, dates and places then read the same across every translation. That consistency helps an office match your documents to your passport.
Do you keep the layout of stamps and seals?
The translation follows the order of the original. Each stamp, seal, signature and handwritten note is described in square brackets where it appears. The apostille is translated too, so the Spanish version reads as one complete file.
Is English to Spanish the cheapest language pair?
Usually it is among the most affordable, because English has the largest group of sworn translators on the official MAEC list. Wide availability also keeps turnaround short. Our price for a standard English certificate starts from €29, with a fixed total quoted before you pay.
Can I order an English to Spanish sworn translation online?
Yes. You upload scans or photos, approve a draft and receive a digitally signed PDF. Since 8 March 2025, a sworn translation signed electronically is legally valid in Spain. More detail: digital sworn translations in Spain.
My document is bilingual. Do you translate both languages?
Tell us the procedure when you upload. For degree homologation we translate only the English; for other procedures we follow what that office's checklist asks.
