In Spain, when an office asks for an official or "certified" translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. A translation sealed by a MAEC-appointed translator is official across Spain without further legalisation (Real Decreto 724/2020). Russian is one of all the languages we translate into Spanish.

Which Russian documents need translating for Spain?

Any Russian-language public document filed with a Spanish office needs a sworn translation into Spanish. That includes ZAGS birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates, criminal record certificates, diplomas and notarial documents. One fact saves time: Russian civil-registry certificates need no apostille for Spain.

That exemption comes from the Spain–USSR exchange of notes of 24 February 1984, in force since 6 April 1985 (BOE-A-1985-6208). Each state admits the other's civil-registry certificates "sin necesidad de legalización". The Spanish Consulate in Moscow says it covers documents of the Russian Federation or the RSFSR, "valid only for Russia".

What the exemption does not change:

  • Other documents still need an apostille: criminal records, diplomas and notarial documents.
  • The sworn Spanish translation is still required.
  • Other former Soviet states are not covered. Ukrainian, Belarusian or Kazakh certificates need an apostille.

Russian birth certificate translation to Spanish

The birth certificate (свидетельство о рождении) opens most nationality, reunification and Registro Civil files. Issued by a ZAGS office in Russia, it travels without an apostille; a repeat certificate (повторное свидетельство) is translated in the same way. Recency rules vary by office. Details: birth certificate sworn translation into Spanish.

Russian marriage certificate translation to Spanish

Reunification, the EU family card and marriage files at the Registro Civil use the marriage certificate (свидетельство о заключении брака). It needs no apostille either. A previous marriage means adding the divorce certificate or ruling (divorce decree sworn translation into Spanish). More: marriage certificate sworn translation into Spanish.

Russian diploma translation to Spanish

A diploma (диплом) and its supplement (приложение к диплому) are education documents, not ZAGS certificates. They need an apostille before translation. For homologation, the supplement usually shows subjects and hours. Details: degree certificate sworn translation into Spanish.

Russian criminal record translation to Spanish

Russian criminal record certificates fall outside the 1984 notes, so they carry an apostille. Validity is set by each office, commonly 3 to 6 months. More: police clearance sworn translation into Spanish.

Which Spanish procedures use Russian-language documents?

Russian-language documents mostly go into four procedures. Nationality and family reunification rely on civil-registry certificates. Homologation relies on the diploma and its supplement, and residence visas on criminal records. Each procedure page below lists the full set of documents that office expects.

How are Cyrillic names spelled in Spanish?

The sworn translator keeps the Latin spelling shown in your passport. Cyrillic can be transliterated in several ways, so one name can appear as Mariya, Mariia or Maria. The passport form keeps your translation consistent with your NIE, TIE and visa. Where a document differs, the translator adds a note.

Original (Russian) Sworn translation (Spanish)
Фамилия: Иванова · Имя: Мария · Отчество: Сергеевна Apellido: IVANOVA · Nombre: MARIIA · Patronímico: SERGEEVNA
Passport: IVANOVA MARIIA N. del T.: en el pasaporte de la titular figura «IVANOVA MARIIA».
Место рождения: г. Самара Lugar de nacimiento: ciudad de Samara

This is translator practice, not a written Spanish rule. Send your passport photo page with every order.

What happens to patronymics in a Spanish translation?

The patronymic stays. The translator renders it as written, in the same position, under the label the certificate uses ("Patronímico"). It is not dropped, merged into the first name or turned into a second surname. Spanish readers then see clearly which part is the family name.

What makes Russian documents tricky to translate into Spanish?

The language is rarely the problem. Delays come from old handwritten certificates, gendered surnames, later stamps and two-language documents. The translator renders each element as it appears on the page. Anything unclear is raised with you in the draft, before the seal goes on.

  • Gendered surnames. Husband Ivanov and wife Ivanova share one family name; each form is kept as written.
  • Handwritten Soviet entries. Anything unreadable is marked illegible, never guessed.
  • Bilingual certificates. Some Soviet-era certificates carry Russian beside another language. We quote both parts if needed.

Can you translate Russian-language documents from Belarus, Kazakhstan or Ukraine?

Yes, once the apostille is on. The 1984 exemption covers Russia only, so documents from other former Soviet states need an apostille first. Every state in the table below is an Apostille Convention party, according to the HCCH status table.

Issuing state Route before translation Note
Russia No apostille for ZAGS certificates; apostille for other documents 1984 exchange of notes
Belarus Apostille (since 31 May 1992) Documents may be in Russian or Belarusian
Kazakhstan Apostille (since 30 January 2001) Documents may be in Russian or Kazakh
Kyrgyzstan Apostille (since 31 July 2011) Check which language your document uses
Uzbekistan Apostille (since 15 April 2012) Check which language your document uses
Moldova Apostille (since 16 March 2007) Documents may be in Romanian or Russian
Georgia, Armenia Apostille (since 14 May 2007; 14 August 1994) Documents may be in the national language
Ukraine Apostille (since 22 December 2003) See Ukrainian to Spanish sworn translation

For Kazakh, Georgian, Armenian or other languages, see sworn translation into Spanish from less common languages. Order matters: apostille before sworn translation. Both steps in one order: apostille and sworn translation.

The quote gives a confirmed delivery date, and the work goes to a MAEC-appointed Russian sworn translator. Criminal record certificate and its apostille from €39 Usually 3–4 working days
Diploma and supplement from €39 5–7 working days for 3–10 pages

These are starting prices. For your final price, send your details through the quote form. We email you a written quotation, and work starts only after you approve it.

As an indicative market range, sworn translations in Spain cost about €30–120 a page. That is roughly €30–80 for the first page and €15–40 for later pages (Cronoshare, January 2026). This is a market range, not our price. Compare every document type in the full price table. Deadline approaching? See our urgent sworn translation service.

Before you order a Russian translation: common worries

Sending a ZAGS certificate to the Registro Civil or a diploma for homologation? These four answers come first.

  • Is the translator real? Each Russian sworn translator we work with is appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and holds every registration Spain requires. The seal on your translation can be checked on the official list with our guide to verifying a Spanish sworn translator.
  • What if the Registro Civil rejects it? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds, such as a surname spelt differently from your passport. Read what happens if a translation is rejected.
  • Is my data safe? Your certificates are used only for your order and deleted within 7 days of delivery, as our privacy policy explains.
  • Requerimiento or cita soon? Give us the date when you upload. The quote confirms whether a Russian translator can meet it.

What does a traducción jurada of a Russian certificate look like?

It mirrors the ZAGS certificate field by field, with Russian labels rendered under their Spanish names. Round stamps and signatures are described where they sit. The translator's certification, signature and seal come last, followed by a sealed copy of the original and any apostille.

Sample: Russian ZAGS birth certificate beside its Spanish sworn translation, showing the patronymic label, a passport-spelling note and the translator's seal and signature

Search for "ruso" in the MAEC Buscador-STIJ to confirm the translator whose seal appears on your translation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Russian sworn translation take?

A Russian ZAGS certificate of 1–2 pages usually takes 3–4 working days. Files of 3–10 pages take 5–7 working days. Timing depends on the document and on which of the about 33 Russian sworn translators is free. Your quote fixes the delivery date in writing before you pay. You can order as soon as you have a scan: ZAGS certificates need no apostille, so there is nothing to wait for.

Can I pay and order from Russia?

You can order from anywhere: we only need scans, and you receive a signed PDF by email. We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express cards, PayPal and bank transfer, including international transfers. Apple Pay and Google Pay work through the card processor. Ask before you upload if you are unsure which method works for you.

Can you translate old Soviet-era certificates?

Yes. Certificates issued by the RSFSR are covered by the 1984 exemption, so they need no apostille. For Soviet certificates issued in other republics, ask the receiving office which route it wants. Handwritten entries are translated as written.

Does a Russian birth certificate still need a sworn translation for Spain if no apostille is required?

Yes. The 1984 exemption removes only the apostille, not the translation.

How do I send my Russian documents for a sworn translation quote?

Photograph or scan each page and any apostille, and add your passport photo page so names match. Originals are never needed. We reply with a total and a delivery date. You decide whether to go ahead before paying. Start here to get a fixed quote for your Russian certificates.
