Which student visa documents need translating?
For a Spain student visa, every foreign public document not in Spanish needs an apostille or legalisation and a translation. The official study-stay sheet (Estancia por estudios, RD 1155/2024) sets the list. It typically covers the police certificate, medical certificate, academic records, proof of funds and, for minors, parental consent. A sworn translation is accepted by Spanish consulates and offices in Spain.
Most student files start with academic records and end with the police certificate. Documents already in Spanish, such as a Spanish admission letter, need no translation. Proof of funds must show the full IPREM amount, which is €600 a month. Your consulate's checklist has the full list. This page is one of our sworn translation services by procedure.

Applying from the USA: certified or sworn translation?
In Spain, when an office asks for an official or 'certified' translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. A US certified translation is not a sworn translation, and most Spanish offices won't accept it. Each US consulate sets its own visa checklist. Miami asks for a sworn translation of the FBI report and medical certificate. Once you are in Spain, your TIE or a renewal needs a sworn translation too. Ordering it once avoids paying twice.
Do I need a police certificate for a student visa?
Yes, if you are an adult and your stay lasts more than 6 months. Spain's study-stay sheet asks for a criminal record certificate covering your country of origin or each country of residence in the last 5 years. It must be apostilled or legalised, then sworn-translated. Validity is set by each office, commonly 3 to 6 months.
Long stays also need a medical certificate under the International Health Regulations 2005. The Miami consulate says it is valid for 3 months.

What do minors need for a Spanish student visa?
A minor applying for a Spanish student visa needs written authorisation from both parents or guardians, stating the activity and length of stay. Proof of the relationship, usually the birth certificate, is also required. Both must be apostilled or legalised and sworn-translated into Spanish before the appointment.
The Miami consulate asks for a birth certificate issued within the last 6 months. Other consulates may differ, so check your consulate's checklist.
We translate the parental authorisation and birth certificate together, with their apostilles. Each parent's name is checked against their passport.
When should I start translations before my course?
Start Spain student visa translations once each document is apostilled, working back from your consulate appointment, not your course start. Most translations take 24–48 hours to 3 working days. Police and medical certificates expire, so order those last; degrees and transcripts can be done first.
| When | What to send | Our turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| As soon as you have your admission | Degree and transcripts, once apostilled | Degree 24–48 hours; transcript 2–3 working days (2–5 pages) |
| After you book your appointment | Police certificate, once apostilled or legalised | 24–48 hours |
| Close to the appointment, inside validity | Medical certificate and any financial documents your consulate asks for | 24–48 hours |

Which translation do Spanish consulates accept for a student visa?
Spanish consulates that require an official translation accept a sworn translation by a MAEC-appointed translator, signed and sealed on every page. It is also what Extranjería expects once you file in Spain for your TIE (foreigner's identity card). Three points decide whether it is accepted.
- Order matters. Apostille or legalise first, then translate the document and the apostille together. Detail: apostille before or after translation.
- Digital is valid. Since 8 March 2025, a sworn translation signed with a qualified electronic certificate is legally valid (Orden AUC/213/2025).
- Check the translator. Match the name, language pair and number on the seal in the official MAEC search (Buscador-STIJ).
For documents issued in English, see our English to Spanish sworn translation page.
Checks we run on every student visa file
- The apostille or legalisation is present and translated with the document.
- Every name matches your passport. Single-name passports get a translator's note where needed.
- Every page is translated and sealed, including the backs of transcripts and every stamp.
- You approve a draft of names, dates and places before the seal is applied.
If a consulate rejects the translation on formal grounds, we redo it free and prioritised; see what happens if a translation is rejected.
Ordering from abroad: your questions on trust
Paying a translator in Spain from Lagos, Lahore or Manila, weeks before a BLS appointment, takes trust. Here is what you can check first.
- Is the translator real? Yes. Each one is appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and uses an official seal. Check that seal on the official MAEC list with our guide to verifying a sworn translator.
- What if the consulate refuses it? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds, such as a name that does not match your passport.
- Is my data safe? Your files are used only for your order and deleted within 7 days of delivery, as our privacy policy explains.
- Appointment very soon? Give us the date; 24-hour and same-day translation is often possible for short certificates.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sworn translation for a Spanish study visa from the USA?
Usually, yes. Each US consulate sets its own checklist, and Miami asks for a sworn translation of the FBI report and medical certificate. You will also need one in Spain for your TIE.
Is the medical certificate needed for a short course?
The study-stay sheet asks for a medical certificate for long stays. A short course on a short-stay visa follows different rules, so check your consulate's checklist.
Does my Spanish admission letter need translating?
No. Documents already in Spanish need no translation. If your letter is in English or another language, we translate it like any other document in your file.
Do my parents' bank statements need translating for my student visa?
It depends on the consulate. Some checklists, such as Mumbai's, exempt financial documents; others ask for them in Spanish. Check your consulate's checklist, then send us only the pages it asks for.
