Urgent marriage certificate translation Spanish

A marriage certificate is usually one or two pages, so it suits fast delivery. Add your appointment or deadline date when you upload. Same-day options and cut-off times are on our urgent sworn translation page.

Which marriage certificate does Spain accept?

Spain accepts the civil marriage certificate issued by the official registry in the country where you married. In India that is the Registrar of Marriages certificate. In the Philippines it is the PSA marriage certificate. The certificate is apostilled or legalised first, then translated by a sworn translator.

A ceremony record alone may not be accepted; check your office. Order a fresh certified copy from the registry, then start the apostille route.

Your marriage certificate by country

Country Version to order Route before translation
India Registrar of Marriages certificate (Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act) State attestation, then MEA apostille
Pakistan NADRA marriage registration certificate (MRC), plus the nikah nama MOFA apostille
Philippines PSA marriage certificate DFA apostille
UK Marriage certificate FCDO paper apostille (no e-Apostille for marriage certificates)
USA Certified copy from the county or state State Secretary of State apostille
Brazil Certidão de casamento from the cartório Apostille from a cartório
Morocco Acte de mariage Apostille
Nigeria Marriage certificate Legalisation: MFA Abuja, then the Spanish Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos, depending on your state

Each country name opens our guide to getting and apostilling documents from that country, including while you live in Spain. Apostille status per country: HCCH Apostille status table.

Is a religious marriage certificate enough?

A religious marriage certificate alone, from a temple, gurdwara or church, may not be accepted in Spain. Spanish offices look for the civil registration of the marriage. Indian couples should translate the Registrar of Marriages certificate. Check your office's checklist before you apostille anything.

Pakistan is different: the NADRA MRC usually goes with the nikah nama. The nikah nama has Urdu and English columns, which can disagree, for example on the dower. For a nikah nama translation into Spanish, the translator reproduces exactly what is written in each column.

What to send with your marriage certificate

  • A clear scan or phone photo of every page, including the back and any registry annotations.
  • The apostille or legalisation. Apostille or legalise first, then translate both together. Background: apostille before sworn translation.
  • The passport photo pages of both spouses. We check every name against them.
  • Your procedure and deadline, so we can flag an issue date that is too old.

Originals are never needed. If a spouse changed surname after the wedding, the translator keeps the certificate wording and adds a translator's note.

How long is a marriage certificate valid for Spain?

There is no single validity rule for a marriage certificate in Spain. Each office sets its own limit from the issue date. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi accepts them for family reunification for 3 months. For Spanish nationality, only the birth certificate may be older than 6 months.

Use Age usually accepted
Family reunification (New Delhi) 3 months
Spanish nationality Under 6 months; only the birth certificate may be older
Registro Civil Usually recent; check your Registro Civil
Other offices Set by each office

The limit runs from the issue date on the certificate, not from the translation date. Sources: New Delhi family reunification and the Ministry of Justice nationality FAQ. Last checked: 1 October 2026.

Where does Spain ask for a marriage certificate?

Spain asks for a foreign marriage certificate whenever a spouse's rights depend on the marriage. Most requests come from offices inside Spain. These are the Registro Civil, the Ministry of Justice for nationality, Extranjería and notaries. Consulates ask for it on spouse visas. Each needs the certificate apostilled or legalised, then sworn-translated.

Marriage certificate sworn translation for Registro Civil

The Registro Civil uses a foreign marriage certificate to record a marriage or a change of marital status. A marriage abroad is registered in Spain only when at least one spouse is Spanish. It usually expects a recent issue. To marry in Spain, you need other documents instead, such as a certificate of no impediment for marrying in Spain. See Registro Civil sworn translation.

Marriage certificate sworn translation for Spanish nationality

Nationality files include a marriage certificate where relevant. The Ministry of Justice asks for documents "debidamente traducidos y legalizados", so a sworn translation is the safe choice. See Spanish nationality sworn translation.

Acta de matrimonio for the EU family card

Spouses of EU citizens living in Spain apply for the EU family card on form EX-19 (Hoja 62). Hoja 62 asks for a "traductor jurado". The marriage certificate proves the relationship. See Extranjería sworn translation.

Marriage certificate sworn translation for family reunification

The resident in Spain files form EX-02, and the spouse must be 18 or over. Hoja 8 asks for translations by a sworn translator. Once approved, the spouse applies for the visa at the consulate within 2 months. New Delhi accepts the marriage certificate for 3 months. See family reunification Spain sworn translation.

Marriage certificate for property or an inheritance in Spain

A Spanish notary may ask for your marriage certificate when you buy property or inherit. It can show the marital regime or a spouse's right as heir. Your notary decides what is needed. See property and inheritance sworn translation.

Marriage certificate translation for a Spain visa

A spouse joining a student, work or other visa holder adds the marriage certificate to the consulate file. Check your consulate's checklist for validity. See Spanish consulate visa sworn translation.

Spouses usually send other documents too. Each has its own page: birth certificate sworn translation into Spanish, police clearance certificate sworn translation and bank statement translation for a Spain visa.

Common marriage certificate errors and how we avoid them

  • Religious certificate only. No civil registration in the file. We flag this from your scan before translating.
  • Apostille stamped on after the translation was done. The new stamp is then missing from the Spanish version, so we wait for it.
  • Certificate too old. We compare the issue date with your procedure, such as the 3-month New Delhi limit.
  • Nikah nama columns differ. The translator reproduces both columns exactly and does not choose between them.
  • Surname changed after marriage. The translator keeps the certificate wording and adds a translator's note.
  • A friend's, agency or foreign certified translation. Offices ask for a MAEC-appointed sworn translator, and ours carry that seal. Anyone can check the seal on the MAEC search (Buscador-STIJ).

Before you pay: four questions worth asking

A marriage certificate often carries both spouses' futures in Spain, from the EU family card to a reunification visa. So these are fair questions before you pay.

  • Is the translator real? Every translator we work with is a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). The seal on each page can be checked on the official MAEC list; our guide shows how to verify a Spanish sworn translator.
  • What if the Registro Civil or Extranjería rejects it? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds, under our re-issue policy.
  • Is our data safe? Your certificate and passports are deleted within 7 days of delivery, as our privacy policy explains.
  • Is your cita or deadline close? Tell us the date when you upload. A one- or two-page certificate suits our urgent sworn translation options.

Frequently asked questions

Who can translate a marriage certificate for Spain?

A sworn translator appointed by the MAEC can translate a marriage certificate for any Spanish office. Hoja 8 and Hoja 62 both ask for a sworn translator. A translation by a friend or a general agency is not what these sheets ask for.

Do you translate Hindu Marriage Act certificates?

Yes. A certificate from the Registrar of Marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act is translated like any civil certificate. Get state attestation and the MEA apostille first. Where Hindi text appears beside the English, the translator notes it. According to the official register as of August 2026, there is no Hindi sworn translator.

Is a certified translation of a marriage certificate enough?

Usually not. In Spain, when an office asks for an official or "certified" translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. A certified translation made outside Spain, for example by a UK or US translator, is not a sworn translation. Most Spanish offices won't accept it. A sworn translation also serves the consulate stage, so you pay once. The difference is explained in sworn vs certified translation.

What if I was married before?

Offices may ask how an earlier marriage ended. A divorce decree then needs the same apostille and sworn translation. See divorce decree sworn translation into Spanish.

How do I translate my marriage certificate for Spain?

To translate your marriage certificate for Spain, apostille or legalise it first. Then send us a scan of every page, including the apostille. A MAEC-appointed sworn translator translates both into Spanish and signs the PDF. You see a fixed price and delivery date before you pay.

Certificates in English go through our English to Spanish sworn translation service; other languages are quoted on request. Other papers for your file are listed under every document we translate.
