How do I get my Indian degree recognised in Spain?

To get an Indian degree recognised in Spain, follow four steps. Get an hours-per-subject certificate from your university. Complete state (HRD) attestation and the MEA apostille. Order a sworn translation by a MAEC-appointed translator. File online with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities: €166.50, decision within up to 6 months. We handle step 3: degree in 24–48 hours, mark sheets in 2–5 working days.

Step Where Time or note

Getting Indian degree papers apostilled while you live in Spain

You rarely need to travel. A family member, or someone you give a power of attorney, can usually request attestation and the MEA apostille in India for you. Check the current route with the Embassy of India in Madrid. Then send us scans once the apostille is on. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi's seal on an unofficial translation is offered only for visa files, not for homologation.

Which documents should I request from my Indian university?

Request your final degree certificate and an academic record showing every subject passed, with hours or credits per subject. Spain's Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities needs both, legalised and translated. Ask for unlaminated originals, then complete HRD or state attestation and the MEA apostille.

Real Decreto 889/2022, article 13.1.d, asks for "the subjects passed and the total workload of each in hours or ECTS credits". The Ministry can also ask for syllabi (programas).

Attestation route: Indian documents sworn translation for Spain.

How do I show subject hours if my mark sheets don't list them?

Ask your university for a certificate stating the hours or credits per subject. Many Indian mark sheets show marks or grades only. Spain's Ministry needs the workload of each subject in hours or ECTS credits. We translate that certificate with your mark sheets, so the subjects match line by line.

Attest and apostille it too. The translator keeps each subject title exactly as printed. Grades, whether CGPA, percentages or divisions, stay exactly as written; sworn translators never convert them. The average grade has its own free Ministry procedure, Equivalencia de la nota media.

Which pages of my Indian documents need an official sworn translation?

Every page you file that is not in Spanish needs an official sworn translation, including the back of the degree and the MEA apostille. For homologation, a document written entirely in two languages needs translating from only one. If your degree is printed entirely in Hindi and English, only the English needs translating.

According to the official register as of August 2026, there are no Hindi sworn translators. If a page is only in Hindi or a regional language, ask your university for an English version.

Also studied in the UK or USA? The Ministry says UK and US documents must be apostilled, however old they are. See UK documents sworn translation for Spain and US documents sworn translation for Spain.

Which Spanish procedure fits my Indian degree?

Regulated professions such as nursing need homologación; other degrees usually need equivalencia. Indian BSc Nursing degrees go to homologación. A BCom, BA or most BTech degrees go to equivalencia, with no right to practise a regulated profession. The difference, fee and appeal rules are explained on degree homologation Spain translation.

Indian BSc nursing homologation in Spain

For Indian BSc nursing homologation in Spain, the sworn translation covers your degree, mark sheets and, if asked, the syllabus. Nursing is regulated, so you apply for homologación. Nurses also need a B2 Spanish certificate (Ministry nursing page). Read our nurse homologation Spain translation page. Career steps are in our guide to working as an Indian-trained nurse in Spain.

Indian engineering degree homologation in Spain

Indian engineering degree homologation in Spain applies only where the degree leads to a regulated profession in Spain. Otherwise, equivalencia gives your BTech or BE a Spanish level in its field. For example, a BTech in Civil Engineering seeking the regulated Ingeniero de Caminos route needs homologación; most BTech degrees take equivalencia.

Indian degree equivalence for a master's in Spain

Holding an Indian master's? Equivalencia can make it equal to the Spanish Máster level. Studying a master's in Spain instead? See Spain student visa from India translation.

When should Indian graduates start translations for homologation?

Start as soon as each document carries its MEA apostille. The Ministry states that translations do not expire, so early translation is safe. The Ministry then has up to 6 months to decide, and no decision by then counts as refusal. So the sooner you file, the sooner the clock starts.

Attestation and apostille in India usually take longest, so plan those first. Translation is the quickest step: 24–48 hours for a degree.

What do Indian graduates get stuck on in homologation?

Common sticking points:

  • No hours per subject. Get the hours certificate before you apostille anything.
  • Laminated certificates. They can be refused for apostille. Request a fresh copy.
  • Single-name passports. A given name only, or Singh or Kaur as surname, causes mismatches. The translator adds a note where spellings differ; see birth certificate sworn translation into Spanish for how names are matched. More in our guide to the single-name passport in Spain.
  • Translating before the apostille. The apostille is missed and a second translation follows.

Which certified translation does the Ministry accept for an Indian degree?

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities accepts a translation by a sworn translator appointed by the MAEC. It also accepts one by an official translator in another EU country, or a non-EU official translator whose signature is legalised. A MAEC sworn translation is official in Spain without further legalisation.

In Spain, when an office asks for an official or "certified" translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. A certified translation made in India is not a sworn translation, and most Spanish offices won't accept it. Every Indian degree translation we deliver is signed by a MAEC-appointed sworn translator.

Check the translator's name and number in the official MAEC search (Buscador-STIJ), or follow how to verify a Spanish sworn translator. Since 8 March 2025, a digitally signed sworn translation is legally valid (Orden AUC/213/2025). Indian degrees in English go through our English to Spanish sworn translation service.

What do we check before your Indian degree file is sealed?

Before the seal goes on, we check that each Indian document carries its MEA apostille and that names match your passport. We also check that subjects match across mark sheets and the hours certificate. Every page, back and stamp is translated. You approve a draft first.

  • The MEA apostille is present and translated with each document.
  • The degree title and grades appear exactly as printed.
  • Every page is sealed, including attestation stamps on the back.

Is it safe to send my Indian degree to a translator in Spain?

Yes. Your original degree stays with you; you send scans only. Your translation is made by a Traductor-Intérprete Jurado appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). The seal on every page can be checked on the official MAEC list. If the Ministry rejects the translation on formal grounds, it is redone free and prioritised.

How much does a sworn translation of an Indian degree set cost?

Your Indian degree set is priced in euros and quoted in writing before work starts. Apostille pages are included. Digital delivery is signed with a qualified electronic signature. The Ministry's €166.50 fee is separate.

As an indicative market range, sworn translations in Spain cost about €30–120 a page. That is roughly €30–80 for the first page and €15–40 for later pages (Cronoshare, January 2026). This is a market range, not our price.

Frequently asked questions

Is a provisional degree certificate accepted?

It can be. RD 889/2022 accepts the degree or a certificate showing it has been issued (certificación acreditativa de su expedición). Check that your provisional certificate states the degree was conferred, then apostille and translate it like the degree.

Do I translate every semester mark sheet?

It depends on what you file. The Ministry needs every subject passed with its hours or credits, so all semester mark sheets usually go in. Every page you file must be translated.

Can my Hindi-English degree be translated from the English only?

Yes, if the whole document is printed in both languages. The Ministry says such documents need a Spanish translation of only one language. Tell us when you upload if any part is in Hindi only.

Homologación or equivalencia for an Indian BTech or MBA?

Usually equivalencia. A BTech, BE or MBA rarely leads to a regulated profession in Spain, so equivalencia gives it a Spanish level (Grado or Máster). The translations are the same either way.

How do I order a sworn translation of my Indian degree documents?

Scan every page of your degree, mark sheets and hours certificate, including each MEA apostille, and upload them. You receive a fixed total and delivery date before you pay. Originals are never needed. The signed PDF suits online filing.
