What do foreign nurses need to work in Spain?
To work as a nurse in Spain with a non-EU degree, you usually need three things. First, homologation of your nursing degree (homologación del título de enfermería) by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Spaniards often call this step "homologar título de enfermería"; "convalidar título de enfermería" usually refers to credit transfer for further study instead. Second, Spanish at B2 level, unless you are exempt. Third, colegiación with your provincial Colegio de Enfermería.
If you already live in Spain, your residence permit decides whether you may work; check it with Extranjería. Non-EU nurses still abroad need a work authorisation, which the employer applies for: see Spain work visa sworn translation. Nurses trained in the EU follow automatic recognition under Directive 2005/36 instead.
| Step | Who decides | What usually needs a sworn translation |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing degree homologation in Spain | Ministry, using ANECA's nursing criteria | Degree, transcript, syllabus if requested |
| Spanish B2 | Proof listed in RD 889/2022 art. 13.2 | Only proofs not issued in Spanish |
| Colegiación | Provincial Colegio de Enfermería | Good standing certificate, sometimes the full study record |
| Work authorisation (non-EU) | Extranjería, then the consulate | Police certificate, medical certificate |

Which nursing documents need translating? (traducción jurada para homologación de enfermería)
For homologation, the Ministry needs your degree certificate and an academic certificate showing the programme's length, subjects and hours. Documents not issued in the EU need an apostille or legalisation. Every document not in Spanish needs an official translation, such as a MAEC sworn translation.
This tick-list covers nursing degree homologation in Spain and the colegiación stage for foreign nurses.
- Degree certificate: degree certificate sworn translation
- Transcript or mark sheets: academic transcript sworn translation
- Syllabus, only if the Ministry asks: syllabus sworn translation
- Good standing certificate for the colegio: certificate of good standing translation Spanish
- Police certificate for the work authorisation: police clearance certificate sworn translation Spanish
- The apostille or legalisation on each: apostille and sworn translation
Each colegio sets its own list for foreign nurses. The Colegio de Enfermería de Castellón, for example, wants your full study record ("expediente completo") in Spanish, plus the original title.
How many clinical hours must my nursing degree show?
The Ministry's nursing page uses a reference standard of 3 years of study and 2,300 hours of clinical training. It also checks the competences set by Orden CIN/2134/2008, using ANECA's nursing criteria. Your transcript should therefore show hours per subject.
For comparison, Directive 2005/36, article 31(3) requires at least 3 years and 4,600 hours, half of them clinical. If your mark sheets show no hours, ask your university for a certificate stating hours or credits per subject. We translate hours exactly as written, never converted.
What happens if my clinical hours fall short?
The Ministry can set compensatory measures under RD 889/2022 article 19: an academic practice period, an aptitude test, a project or courses. You complete them within 4 years of notification. The general process is on our degree homologation Spain translation page.
Do I need Spanish B2 to work as a nurse?
Yes, in most cases. RD 889/2022 requires proof of the language competence needed to practise a regulated profession, and the Ministry's nursing page confirms B2 Spanish. Nationals of countries where Spanish is an official language are exempt. Others usually show a DELE B2 or another proof listed in article 13.2.
An Escuela Oficial de Idiomas B2 certificate also counts. A DELE needs no translation; an English-language proof does.
Where are your nursing documents from?
Your route depends on the issuing country. India, the UK, the USA and the Philippines use the apostille. Nigeria needs legalisation in two steps. Latin American documents are usually in Spanish: they need the apostille or legalisation, but no translation.
Living in Spain already? A relative or someone with your power of attorney can usually collect and apostille documents at home. Check with your country's consulate in Spain first. Then send us scans once the apostille is on.
Nurse registration documents translation from India
Indian documents take the MEA apostille after state attestation. If your mark sheets list marks but not hours, request an hours certificate first. The Kerala Nurses and Midwives Council lists a "Good Standing Certificate" on its website; ask other state councils what they issue. See Indian degree homologation in Spain and Indian documents sworn translation for Spain.
Nurse registration documents translation from the UK
The Ministry says UK documents must be apostilled, whatever their date; the FCDO issues the apostille. For good standing, the NMC sends a certificate of current professional status (CCPS) straight to the overseas regulator. It is valid 3 months. More: UK documents sworn translation for Spain.
Nurse registration documents translation from the USA
If you are planning how to work as a nurse in Spain from the USA, start with the apostille. State documents take the state Secretary of State apostille; federal documents go to the US Department of State. Nursys license verification only serves other US states. See US documents sworn translation for Spain.
Nurse registration documents translation from Nigeria
Nigeria is not in the Apostille Convention. Certificates are usually verified by the Federal Ministry of Education first. The legalisation route is MFA Abuja, then the Spanish Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos, depending on your state. More: Nigerian documents sworn translation for Spain.
Trained in the Philippines? See Philippine nurse documents sworn translation for Spain and Philippine documents sworn translation for Spain.
What official translation does the Ministry accept for nursing documents?
The Ministry accepts an official translation made "a través de un traductor jurado nombrado por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación". This MAEC sworn translation is valid in Spain without further legalisation. The Ministry also states that translations do not expire.
- Apostille first. The document and its apostille are translated together: apostille before or after translation.
- PDF or paper. An electronically signed sworn translation has been legally valid since 8 March 2025.
- English documents. Most nursing files are in English: see English to Spanish sworn translation.

When should a nurse order each translation?
Order degree and transcript translations once apostilled. Translations do not expire, and the Ministry has up to 6 months to decide. Order the good standing certificate last: colegios usually want it under 3 months old. Ceuta's colegio states a maximum validity of three months.
| Document | When to order | Standard turnaround |
|---|---|---|
| Degree certificate | Once apostilled | 24–48 hours |
| Transcript | Once apostilled | 2–5 working days |
| Syllabus | Only if the Ministry asks | 3–5 working days |
| Good standing certificate | Just before colegiación | 24–48 hours |
| Police certificate | Close to the visa appointment | 24–48 hours |

Why can a nurse rely on a translator chosen online?
A nursing file can sit at the Ministry for months, so a faulty translation is costly. That is why every translator we work with is a sworn translator-interpreter appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). Each one is on the official MAEC register and holds every authorisation Spain requires. If the Ministry or your colegio rejects the translation on formal grounds, it is redone free and prioritised.
- Is the translator real? See how to verify a Spanish sworn translator on the official list.
- What if your colegio or the Ministry objects? Free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds. Read how a free re-issue works.
- Is my data safe? Your files are deleted within 7 days of delivery, under our privacy policy.

Frequently asked questions
Does homologation alone let me work as a nurse?
No. Homologation recognises your degree, but Ley 2/1974 article 3.2 makes joining the Colegio Profesional a requirement to practise. Non-EU nationals also need a residence and work authorisation.
Can US nurses work in Spain?
Yes, with homologation, B2 Spanish, colegiación and a work authorisation. Nursys verification is designed for US states. Ask your state board of nursing what it can issue for an overseas regulator.
Can I get my nursing documents translated online from India?
Yes. We work from scans of your apostilled documents and mark sheets, and deliver a signed PDF. Indian BSc Nursing files also need state attestation and the MEA apostille first; see Indian degree homologation in Spain.
How do I send my nursing documents for a fixed quote?
Upload a scan of each document and its apostille, and tell us your stage and any deadline. Originals are never needed. Before you pay, you see the fixed total and the delivery date. Work begins once you accept.
