What documents do Indian students need for a Spanish study visa?
Spain's Ministry of Inclusion sets the core list in its Estancia por estudios sheet. You need admission to an authorised centre, enough funds, health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, and a valid passport. Adults staying over six months add a criminal record certificate and a medical certificate.
The New Delhi Embassy's student visa checklist adds India-specific detail.
| Requirement | What the official lists say | Translation note |
|---|---|---|
| Admission letter | From an authorised centre, with start date and length of course | Spanish letters need no translation |
| Fees paid, accommodation | Proof of payment and of your address in Spain | Only if not in Spanish |
| Funds | €600 a month (100 per cent of IPREM) | Depends on your mission |
| Health insurance | Insurer authorised in Spain; New Delhi: no co-payments or limits | Spanish policies need none |
| Police clearance certificate | Adults, stays over 180 days; apostilled | Plan a sworn translation |
| Medical certificate | Stays over 180 days; New Delhi wants the Hague apostille | Plan a sworn translation |
New Delhi warns it "may request for any additional documentation", so read your own mission's checklist first.
Which Spanish mission in India handles my student visa: New Delhi, Mumbai or Bangalore?
It depends on your state. New Delhi covers the northern and eastern states. The Consulate General in Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Chhattisgarh and Telangana, among others. A Consulate General in Bangalore covers Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
New Delhi's states include Delhi NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Bangalore was created by Real Decreto 1194/2025, so check its current checklist. New Delhi takes fees by demand draft in favour of the Embassy.
BLS International is the visa service provider in India. Common mistake: using a friend's checklist from another city.
How much money must Indian students show for a Spain student visa?
You must show €600 a month for your stay, equal to 100 per cent of IPREM, Spain's public income index. A first family member adds 75 per cent of IPREM and each further one 50 per cent. Prepaid accommodation for the whole stay can reduce the amount. Tuition is not counted.
New Delhi asks for:
- Bank statements of the sponsor or student for the last six months, stamped and signed by the bank.
- Income tax returns (ITRs) for the last three years, with a PAN card copy.
- Payslips for the last six months.
- An original sponsor's letter or Affidavit of Support, with the sponsor's Aadhaar or passport copy.
Example: a nine-month course means at least €5,400 (9 × €600).
Do these need Spanish? Mumbai exempts "passports and economic proof documents" from sworn translation; New Delhi has no general translation line. See whether you need a bank statement sworn translation for your mission before you order.
Which Indian documents need an apostille and a Spanish translation for a study visa?
Indian public documents need the MEA apostille, after state attestation where required. The national sheet asks for foreign documents translated by a sworn translator. Indian missions apply this differently: Mumbai asks for a sworn translation of documents in a regional or foreign language, except passports and economic proof.
An apostille confirms the signature and seal on a public document. Apostille first, then translate the document and its apostille together. Our guide on why the apostille comes before the sworn translation explains the order.
| Indian document | Before translation | Translation page |
|---|---|---|
| Police clearance certificate (PCC) | Regional Passport Office; MEA apostille | police clearance certificate sworn translation |
| Medical certificate | Registered medical practitioner; apostille (New Delhi) | medical certificate sworn translation |
| Degree certificate | University; attestation, then MEA apostille | degree certificate sworn translation |
| Mark sheets | University or board | academic transcript sworn translation |
| Birth certificate (minors) | Municipal registrar; MEA apostille | birth certificate sworn translation |
Most Indian certificates are in English: see English to Spanish sworn translation and, for apostille steps, Indian documents for Spain.
New Delhi can also seal an unofficial translation for visa files only. Our comparison of the Delhi embassy seal and a sworn translation covers the costs.
What extra papers do Indian students under 18 need?
Both parents or guardians sign a notarised authorisation, on Rs. 100 stamp paper in India, naming the school and period. It is apostilled, then translated into Spanish by a sworn translator. Mumbai adds: "This requirement cannot be waived." The guardian's Spanish documents need no translation.
Lived abroad recently? The criminal record certificate must cover each country you lived in during the last five years, such as the UK: see UK documents for Spain.
Appointment coming up? We translate your PCC and medical certificate first, and you approve a draft before the seal goes on. See our Spain student visa sworn translation page for all nationalities.
When should Indian students apply for a Spanish study visa?
Apply at least two months before your studies start, the national sheet says. The consulate then decides within one month, and silence counts as a refusal. Once notified, you must collect the visa within two months.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| On receiving your admission | Start state attestation and the MEA apostille on degrees and mark sheets |
| 6–8 weeks before the appointment | Apply for the PCC; book a medical check |
| 3 weeks before | Order translations of apostilled documents |
| 2 weeks before | Approve the draft: names, dates, places |
The PCC goes last: its validity is set by each office, commonly 3 to 6 months. Single-name passport? Read our guide to single-name passports in Spain. Short of time? Use our urgent sworn translation service.
What must Indian students do after arriving in Spain?
If your stay is over six months, apply in person for your foreigner's identity card (TIE) within one month of entry. Your stay lasts as long as your higher-education studies. Authorisations over one year need proof of enrolment at the start of each course.
Family members of higher-education students can join, but may not work during this stay. Their certificates follow the rules on our family reunification sworn translation page.
How do I renew my student stay in Spain? (prórroga de estancia por estudios)
You renew at the Oficina de Extranjería in the province that granted your stay, online or through a representative. Apply in the two months before expiry. Each renewal matches your enrolled course, up to one year. Silence after one month counts as a refusal.
The file holds your passport, proof of funds (family support counts), health insurance, proof of enrolment with fees paid and the fee receipt. Each authorisation allows up to two renewals.
Why this matters for translation: renewals go to Extranjería, whose sheet asks for foreign documents translated by a sworn translator. See our Extranjería sworn translation page.
Example: Rohan, from Pune, renews in Valencia. His father's Indian bank statements prove family support, so he orders a sworn translation of every page he files. At the Mumbai visa stage, they were exempt.
Can Indian graduates stay in Spain to work or look for a job?
Yes, through two routes. Once you hold your degree, you can modify your student stay into residence and work, or self-employment, valid one year. A university graduate of a Spanish institution can instead request a 24-month job-search or business start-up residence (Hoja 20).
Route 1: modification (Hoja 58). Ministry Hoja 58 (April 2026) needs your qualification obtained. Options include employed work (cuenta ajena) or self-employment (cuenta propia), each for one year.
Route 2: job search or starting a business (Hoja 20). Hoja 20 (September 2025) needs at least a university degree (EQF level 6) from a Spanish institution. Apply in the 60 days before your stay expires. It lasts 24 months, cannot be renewed and does not allow work; once you find a job, you apply for a work authorisation.
Both sheets ask for sworn translations of foreign documents. A regulated profession, such as nursing, also needs degree homologation sworn translation. Employer-led permits from abroad: Spain work visa sworn translation.

Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a Spain student visa without a sponsor?
Yes. You can show your own funds or a scholarship instead. New Delhi asks scholarship holders to prove the amount with documents.
Do I need IELTS for a Spain student visa from India?
It depends on your course. The national sheet lists no language test, but your university may ask for one.
Can I work in Spain on a student visa?
It depends on the rules in force when you apply. The 2024 Regulation lets students work alongside their studies within set limits, so check the current conditions before signing a contract.
Can my spouse come with me on my Spain student visa?
Yes, if you are in higher education. A spouse or partner and minor children can apply with you or later, and each adds to the funds you must show.
Does Spain need an Indian PCC for a course under six months?
No, not under the national sheet. The criminal record certificate applies to adults staying over six months (New Delhi: over 180 days).
Do I need to fly back to India to renew my student stay?
No. Renewals are filed in Spain, at the Oficina de Extranjería, online or through a representative. Apply in the two months before your stay expires.
